Hoot: An Engaging Upper-Grade Read Aloud

One of my fondest memories from my teaching internship was my time in 4th grade doing Literature Circles. My Supervising Teacher was very serious about her read alouds with her students and I was grateful to be able to listen and to be a part of it. She always kept the students engaged in the reading and stopped at the perfect place to keep the kids (and me!) on the edge of our seats.

During my time their we read the chapter book Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Hoot is a 2003 Newberry Honor book that displays cinematic themes of friendship, greed, and the importance of caring for things that cannot speak for themselves. Throughout the story the main characters are working to stop a construction company from building on an owl habitat. The story explores the main characters understanding of people that are in different life situations and have had different experiences. This story is relatable for kids because it identifies a lot of the same struggles that students do today. It is also relatable because the characters in the story are in an upper elementary grade.

This story is a fun and engaging read aloud that can address environmental issues, friendship, kindness, and standing up for what you believe in.

Happy Saturday, Friends!

  1. I have never heard of this story!! I will definitely have to check it out. I love that the teacher made time for read alouds. With time so crunched, it is easy to put off reading aloud to students. I think it is SO IMPORTANT that we find the time. The students LOVE it and it is so beneficial for them. Thanks for sharing!
